Translation

Hadith al-Kisa is a famous narration from the household of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). This narration recounts the incident when the Prophet (PBUH) was visited by his daughter, Fatima, her husband, Ali, and their two children, Hasan and Husayn. While they were sitting together, an angel from Allah descended and introduced himself as Jibreel. The angel informed the Prophet (PBUH) that Allah had commanded him to purify the family members present in the room. The Prophet (PBUH) covered them with his own cloak, prayed for them and recited verses from the Quran as a sign of their purification.

The Hadith al-Kisa is a symbol of love and respect for the Ahlul Bayt (the family of the Prophet) and signifies the intimate connection that Muslims have with the Prophet and his family.

SIGNIFICANCE

From Shaykh `Abdullah ibn Nurullah al-Bahrani has recorded in his book entitled `Awalim al-`Ulum through an authentic chain of authority that Jabir ibn `Abdullah al-Ansari said that he heard Fatimah the daughter of the Holy Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him and his Household,(Also in Mafatih al-Jinan.)
The Tradition of the Cloak, or Hadith al-Kisa’, is a narrative of an incident where the Prophet Muhammad assembled Hasan, Husayn, Ali, and Fatima under his cloak. Followers of the school of Ahlul Bayt customarily hold meetings in which this tradition is recited.

The Tradition of the Cloak introduces the pure servants of God to the people of the world such that if the public follow them, they would live ideal lives and achieve perfection. By pondering over the great personalities mentioned in this tradition,This noble tradition, which is generally printed at the end of the book Mafatih al-Jinan was not included in this book by the author i.e. Shaykh Abbas Qummi. It was added by the publishers of this book later, citing from the book ‘Awalim by a valid document from Jabir ibn ‘Abdullah Ansari. as well as the prevalence of this behaviour in society, a pure, wise, and noble culture associated with extreme love, respect, modesty, and courtesy towards one other can be established.

BENEFITS

Hadeeth-e-Kisa is that gracious description, which is a Tradition too and a description and an event too, a description of excellences also and a reason of prosperity too

  • Who is among the believers not aware of the words or meaning of this gracious Hadeeth, this is the Hadeeth healing the ill, the medium of fulfilling the desires of the desirous, supporting the helpless person engulfed in calamities
  • Just as this fact has also been mentioned itself in it that, by reciting it the mercy of Allah descends, and angels come and are busy asking for forgiveness
  • If recited before an owner of insight then better and spacious conditions are attained, if recited before a needy person then his needs are fulfilled, and since hundreds of years the believers are deriving the benefits of it’s graces, and why should it not be? It is a recital of the owners of infallibility and purity, a mention of Siddiqa-e-Tahera (s.a.w.a), a commentary of the Holy Qur’an, an event of the assembly of Allah’s lights, amazement and hope for the dwellers of Allah’s throne and the greatness and excellence for the best of humans and it’s pure roots
  • If, in presence of these specialities if grace, prosperity and mercy does not descend then when

haad’aa tah’-tal-kisaaa-i minal-faz’-li i’ndal-laah
what significance has Allah given for getting together underneath this cloak ?”
faqaalan-nabee-yu s’al-lal-laaho a’lay-hi wa aaalihi:
The Prophet (s) replied :
وَالَّذِي بَعَثَنِي بِالْحَقِّ نَبِيَّاً
wal-lad’ee baa’thanee bi-h’aq-qi nabee-
“By Him who rightfully appointed me a Prophet (s)
yaw-was’-tafaanee bir-risaalati naj-jeea
and chose me a Messenger for the salvation of the mankind.
maa d’ukira khabarunaa haad’aa fee mah’-falim-mim-mah’aafili
whenever and wherever an assembly
ah-lil-ar-z’i wa fee-hi jam-u’m-min shee-a’tinaa wa muh’-ib-bee-naa
of our followers and friends mention this event,
il-laa wa nazalat a’lay-himur-rah’-mah
Allah will bestow on them His Blessings and Mercy;
wa h’af-fat bihimu lamalaaa-ikah was-tagh-farat lahum ilaaa ay-yatafar-raqoo
angels will encircle them asking Allah the remission of their sins until the assembly disperses
faqaala a’lee-yun a’lay-his-salaamu : id’aw-wal-laahi fuz-naa wa faaza shee-a’tunaa wa rab-bil-kaa’-bah
So Ali said : “Verily, by the Lord of Kabaa! we and our followers are the winners”
faqaala abee rasoolul-laahi s’al-lal-laaho a’lay-hi wa aaalihi:
Then my father replied :
يَا عَلِيُّ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَنِي بِالْحَقِّ نَبِيّاً
yaa a’lee-yu wal-lad’ee baa’thanee bil-h’aq-qi nabee-yaw
“By Him who rightfully appointed me a Prophet
was’-tafaanee bir-risaalati najee-ya
and chose me a Messenger for the salvation of the mankind,
ma d’ukira khabarunaa haad’aa fee mah’-falim-mim-mah’aafili ah-lil ar-z’i
whenever and wherever an assembly
wa fee-hi jam-u’m-min shee-a’tinaa wa muh’ib-bee-naa
our followers and friends mentions this event,
wa fee-him mah-moo-mun il-laa wa far-rajal-laaho ham-mahoo
there shall remain none grieved but Allah will remove his grief,
walaa magh-moo-mun il-laa wa kashafal-laaho gham-mahoo
there shall remain none distressed but Allah will dispel his distress,
wa laa t’aalibu h’aajatin il-laa wa qaz’al-laaho h’aajatah
there shall remain none wish-seeker but Allah will grant his wish.”
faqaala a’lee-yun a’lay-his-salaamu id’aaw-wal-laahi fuz-naa wa sui’d-naa wa kad’aalika shee-atunaa
`Ali, peace be upon him, said, “Then, we have won and attained pleasure. I swear it by Allah. So have our adherents;
faazoo wa sui’doo fid-dunyaa wal aaakhirati wa rab-bil-kaa’-bah
they have won and attained pleasure in this world and in the Hereafter. I swear it by the Lord of the Ka`bah.”
